The Great Kindness Challenge

On Saturday, August 14th, our youth groups participated in “The Great Kindness Challenge.”  Orenco’s Saltines, our Student Action Leadership Team, performed random acts of kindness in the past school year for strangers and friends alike.  This event was the culmination of their efforts.

Working from our own list of ideas as well as from the event’s downloadable list, here are just some of the things we accomplished in our local community:

  • Washed cars for charity.
  • Brought cookies to the police station.
  • Delivered flowers to nursing home residents.
  • Hosted a lemonade stand to raise money for charity.
  • Sent funds to HomePlate, a non-profit supporting homeless youth by providing showers, meals, and other aid in Washington County.
  • Smiled at strangers.
  • Handed out water to construction workers on a 90+ degree day.
  • Provided sack lunches for day-laborers, homeless, and others in need.
  • Left money at a pay phone for its visitors.
  • Visited church families to brighten their day!
  • Left balloons or thoughtful notes for both those we know and do not know.
  • Complimented others.

At youth group prior to this challenge, we studied various passages in the Bible which included practical ways to share our faith; our favorites are James 2:14-17 and Hebrews 13:1-2.  I am so proud of the young adults of our church and their willingness to reach out to others! They volunteered to spend a very hot summer day in service to those in need.

Weekly youth group for all sixth through twelfth graders begins September 12th and continues throughout the school year.  Though we play our share of games (gigantic twister is coming up, and Duct Tape Night is a big annual favorite), I wanted to report on our Great Kindness Challenge so that you hear what our youth are also doing in our church and community.  Bible study and prayer is a regular part of our Sunday evenings together.  Our kids bring their friends to youth group and have never been shy about participating, asking questions about their faith, and showing their commitment to their friends and family.

I am still in need of adult volunteers for this school year.  Share your gifts, time, and talents with this wonderful group of kids.  Speak to me about our middle school and high school groups and how you can be involved.

In Christ,

Rachel
